Early intervention as important as national defence

The All-Party Parliamentary Group for Conception to Age 2 – First 1001 Days has published a report which says that tackling mental health problems, neglect and abuse in the first few years of a child’s life should be prioritised by government. The report states that failing to tackle mental health issues and abuse in the first 1001 days of a child’s life costs taxpayers £23bn a year.

The report highlights the need to support mothers with mental health problems. Home-Start is well aware that mental health problems are one of the main reasons families come to us for support. Home-Start’s manifesto, All Our Children, called for more support to help children whose parents are suffering from a mental illness.
