There are several ways that you can help Home-Start in Hampshire, Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight in a voluntary capacity:
- by supporting a family as a home-visiting volunteer
- by joining a local Home-Start trustee board
- by helping in a Home-Start group
- by supporting our fundraising activities
Home-Start’s home-visiting volunteers come from many different backgrounds and vary in age but all are either parents themselves or have parenting experience. They are carefully selected for their understanding of the difficulties of family life, good listening skills, and friendly approach. All volunteers attend a 30 hour preparation course, undergo an enhanced DBS check and provide two references before being matched with a family. They then take their own individual skills and experience to the families they visit. Our volunteers offer their time and commitment and are non-judgemental.
Each locall Home-Start is governed by a professional, skilled trustee board which is made up of local people from a wide range of backgrounds such as social care, health, business, finance, legal, or HR. The main requirements of a trustee are a real interest in the work of the charity and a willingness to be actively involved in all aspects of governance. The trustee board is responsible for the financial security of the organisation and ensures legal compliance. Trustees are also responsible for ensuring the charity complies with the Home-Start Quality Assurance System.
